Doctors at Osmania General Hospital (OGH), Hyderabad, performed what is recognised as India's first simultaneous five-organ (multivisceral) transplant in a government hospital. The 36-hour surgery was carried out on a 30-year-old engineer from Rajanna Sircilla district who had a rare intestinal disorder that prevented him from digesting food or absorbing nutrients.

After years of treatment and prolonged dependence on intravenous nutrition, transplantation was his only option. He had been admitted to OGH six months earlier and placed on the Jeevandan waiting list. The blood group compatibility and a favourable lymphocyte cross-match made it challenging to finding a suitable donor.

Led by Dr. CH Madhusudhan, the transplant team successfully transplanted the stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small intestine, and right colon donated by a 35-year-old woman following brainstem death caused by a pregnancy-related brain haemorrhage.

The patient was successfully weaned off ventilator support and remained metabolically stable. The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) described the surgery as a landmark achievement, recognising it as the first five-organ transplant of its kind in an Indian government hospital. The milestone highlighted the growing expertise of public-sector transplant programmes and offered new hope for patients requiring complex multivisceral transplantation.
