A major milestone has been achieved by Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, with the first ever liver transplant in a government hospital in the state of Maharashtra. The transplant was conducted at the Super Speciality Hospital of GMCH, on a 46-year-old farmer suffering from end-stage liver disease.

The transplant was led by GMCH Dean Dr. Raj Gajbhiye, alongside liver transplant expert Dr. Ravi Mohanka and his team from Reliance Hospital, Mumbai. The seven-hour surgery was made possible by the donor family's generous decision to donate their loved one's organs after brainstem death. The transplant was performed under a collaborative programme in which specialists from Reliance Hospital supported GMCH in providing liver transplant services and developing its local transplant programme.

GMCH has once again made history in Maharashtra's transplant programme, having earlier performed the state's first kidney transplant in a government hospital in 2016. This latest achievement marks another important step in expanding advanced transplant care within the state's public health system.
