“My patient Mr. J. M. Tanna aged 75 years was transplanted on 1st October 1970, by Mr. Frank Ellis, and assisted by me, at Gay’s Hospital in London. His chronology of management has many firsts.

1. He was treated by me with peritoneal dialysis in 1969, which is among the earliest patients of peritoneal dialysis in India.

2. He was managed by me on home haemodialysis in 1969- 70, which makes him the first Indian to be an home dialysis.

3. His kidney transplant 20 years and 3 months ago makes him possibly the first Indian to undergo transplant and certainly the longest surviving. His donor was his younger brother. The graft is functioning well.

This is to bring to your knowledge that on April 24th 2000 my only son died in a car accident, he was declared brain dead. On the advice of my relative who is a leading Nephrologist in Indore, we donated his kidneys, eyes and skin to the needy.
