The Houston and transplant composite tissue allograft institute has been established by the Park Plaza Hospital in Houston, Texas, USA, as a research and clinical centre of excellence for Hans and transplantation. The institute will conduct basic research and expects to perform its first hand transplant in the third quarter of 2001. Multiple tissue transplants, called composite tissue transplant, such as knee, femur, tendon, and larynx, will be performed eventually. The institute will be directed by Scott Gruber, MD, a member of the Louisville, Kentucky, Hand Transplant Team, who performed the first hand transplant in the USA in 1999. To date, at least 6 hand transplant procedures have been performed worldwide.

First- ever finger- joint transplant performed in Germany
Another big step forward in the field of tissue engineering finger- joint tissue was grown, from cells taken from a patients rib cartilage and hipbone over a 4 week period. According to the biotechnology company that supplied the finger joint tissue “the joint grew in its three dimensional form and then could be transplanted”.
This first- ever finger- joint transplant recipient was a person whose middle joint of the finger of the hand was destroyed in a machine. The procedure was performed in Germany and doctors are hopeful that the joint become fully capable of movement.
