The European Union is making efforts to increase organ donation and transplants through raising public awareness about the concept – one of the specific methods to be adopted is issue of organ donor cards. Organ donor cards have a unique role in educating people about the gift of life through organ donation. The European Union has 27 member states. A Eurobarometer survey estimates that while on an average, 56 per cent of EU citizens are ready to donate organs, the proportion varies significantly among countries. Figures show that at least ten people die in the EU daily for want of an organ  replacement and the demand for transplants is more than twice the availability. Some of the EU countries, like Belgium and Austria, have a presumed consent law in place for organ donation where it is assumed that everyone had agreed (or consented) to donating their organs unless they’d specifically opted ou   in writing. Some countries require written proof of willingness and consent of the family. It is felt that a donor card campaign will help people to commit to organ donation. With increasing mobility of patients and medical professionals within the EU, health care will be benefited if organ donation rates rise across the member states.
