In a bid to further tighten the process of unrelated organ donations, each meeting of the three-member Chennai Authorisation Committee to clear unrelated organ donors is to be videotaped and preserved. Patients and donors appearing for the counselling session are informed that the proceedings are being recorded. The videotaping is being done to ensure that the rules are being followed by all groups involved: patients, donors, relatives, doctors and members of the Authorisation Committee. It will serve as proof if doubts arose about the veracity of a donor at a later date. It will also ensure that the same person (donor) does not appear repeatedly for the same patient or another patient after being rejected. Currently, any patient rejected once can technically approach the Authorisation Committee one more time, seeking “reconsideration.” The Authorisation Committee has decided to treat with suspicion every case of a donor coming from an area notorious for kidney trade; for instance, North Chennai and Villivakkam. Recently, a case of a donor from Korukkupet (in North Chennai) was rejected due to conflicting reports from the patient, donor and spouse of the donor. The reasons for disqualification of the donors have also been posted online. The reasons range from inability to produce appropriate    documentation to questions over HLA typing as well as cases where the donor was not aware of the consequences of organ donation post surgery.
