Honouring Organ Donor Families in Chennai

It has been 10 years since MOHAN Foundation started on its journey and it is the deceased donors of Chennai and their families who have been our inspiration all these years. In October1999, we organized the first felicitation function to  honour these truly unique families. Over 60 family members attended the function that was held at the Loyola College premises in Chennai. Saplings were planted and a plaque, in memory of the organ donors of Chennai, was installed. Since then the foundation has regularly held  Chennai but also in Hyderabad and Vellore. In Hyderabad, so far, twenty families have been felicitated and a similar number of families honoured at Christian Medical College, Vellore.

It was only fitting that, in this our tenth year, we once again pay tribute to the cadaver organ donors of Chennai and  function. These families, even in the midst of extreme grief, when their loved ones were dying, thought of their fellow human beings who were suffering from organ failure. They gathered the courage to donate the organs of their loved one so that others could get a second chance in life. This issue of the Indian Transplant Newsletter is therefore very special as it covers thefunction that  was held on 7th June 2007 at the Raj B h a v a n Chennai in the  the His Excellency Shri Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor of Tamil Nadu.

In India, we have done approximately 1200 such t r a n s p l a n t s from cadaver  organ donations in the last 10 years and of  these almost 350 have been done in Tamil Nadu. This has been possible due to     efforts of many activists from a number of hospitals in Tamil Nadu. At the function, we also honoured these hospitals for their contribution to this noble cause. MOHAN Foundation has played a facilitating role to make it all happen for the last 10 years and has tried, in whatever small way, to spread the message of organ donation in the country. The potential of this programme to take care of organ shortage in the country has not been explored. We only require to do 2 to 3 donations per million population to take care of our current requirement and overcome shortage of kidneys in India. This rate of donation will also ensure that we not only take care of India’s requirement for livers and heart but also the requirement of all our neighboring countries for these organs.
