Two more states are in the limelight for transplantations, but for the wrong reason which is money. In Kerala, the two hospitals in the dock are Baby Memorial Hospital and the National Hospital in Kozhikode. Doctors from the two hospitals and relatives of some recipients deposed before the Ethics Committee of the Indian Medical Association. Dr. Mohammed Ali, one of the special inquiry team members said that many of the donors who had sold their kidneys, had done so through middlemen. However, some of the donors only received RS.65000/- although they had struck a deal for RS.1 00000/-. He said disciplinary action would be taken against the hospitals and doctors if it were found that they were involved in violating the law.

A similar scenario prevails in Andhra Pradesh with the Authorisation Committee there under a cloud for failing to check the racketeering in kidneys under its very nose. An explanation was sought and the committee chairman reportedly admitted that several patients had produced fake certificates to get permission for Renal Transplantation. However, in defense, it was conveyed that the committee was given no powers to identify the fake certificates that testified to a relationship between the donor and the recipient of a kidney. In addition the committee was also not empowered to take action against the private kidney transplantation centers for routing the applications with fake documents. However, clear the waters has decided to reconstitute the entire committee and also increase their strength from seven to eleven while acknowledging that it was almost impossible to probe the use of fake documents in more than 500 cases, the government has asked that the Authorisation Committee be extra cautious in granting permissions for transplantations.
