A new blitzkrieg was launched in USA, in April 2001, by the Secretary of Health and Human Service (HHS), Tommy Thompson. It was aimed at trying to reduce the increasing disparity between the member of Americans awaiting a transplant and the number who donate.

The major elements of Thompson’s initiative include a partnership with business called “Workplace Partnership for Life” (these companies will pledge to conduct donor recruitment programs with their employees), introduction of a model donor card, a feasibility study on formation of a national registry, a national “gift of life” medal of honor for donor families, and developing, a model driver’s education curriculum, wherein a curriculum would be developed and offered to state and local education system,  to discuss becoming a donor.
