September 2000 is when the Olympics happened in Sydney but an equally special event took place in June 2000 in Florida, USA – the National kidney Foundation’s 2000 US Transplant Games. More than 7000 transplant recipient athletes, their families and friends and donor family members gathered at Disney’s world of sports complex in Florida. Approximately 2000 transplant athletes in the age group of 3 to 75 competed for medals in 13 different sports including track and field, swimming, tennis basketball, cycling, bowling, golf, volleyball, badminton, racquetball and table tennis. The games also featured special workshops for donor families and an education programme for professionals involved in transplantation. One of the highlights of the four-day event was a 5km race for Organ and Tissue donation.
