Farmers in Andhra Pradesh have now been found selling their kidneys in Delhi. A broker shatrugenudu Raju and his accomplice. Srinivasamurthy were remanded to judicial custody in May this year and charged with causing harm and cheating under section 326 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code. Raju confessed to taking 26 landless farmers to Delhi where they sold their kidney each at Rs. 50,000. But the police have identified only ten persons – eight from the village of Rentachintala (Guntur district) and two from neighboring Kamabhapadu. All of them had familiar stories of debt and failure to narrate. For them donating a kidney seemed to be the only out of a no win situation not realizing that they were jumping from the frying pan into the fire.
