The Organ Donor card is now more than just a PR exercise or a celebrity endorsement or a piece of paper. A remarkable 73-year-old lady, Mrs. J. Sumitha, showed us that it actually works, after she passed away on 13th June 2014 in Chennai. In a first, the MOHAN Foundation Donor card played a critical role in facilitating the greatest of gifts – the eyes and skin of Mrs. J. Sumitha were donated as per her wishes by her family.

Mrs. Sumitha, who had been ill for some time, got in touch with MOHAN Foundation in April 2014 to pledge her organs online. This pledge was made while she was bedridden and paralysed on one side of her body. Her zest for life was inimitable and even while terminally ill she wanted to help others through both her actions and the positive attitude she carried within her.

When she died, the swift actions of her family in informing MOHAN Foundation of her passing ensured that her wish was carried out and that her legacy would help enrich the lives of others. Her daughter, Dr. Supraja Dharini, said, “My mother believed that every living thing around us can teach us something about the world. She valued all life without exception.”

“This donation underlines the fact that a committed individual and his/her family can bring about a change. It also emphasises the importance of the Donor Card and the reach of online pledging,” said Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee of MOHAN Foundation.
