India's first ever kidney transplant surgery between patients of incompatible blood groups was conducted at a hospital in th Hyderabad on 19 July 2011. Doctors at the Kamineni Super Specialty Hospital conducted the surgery on a patient with blood group O+, with his father who had blood group A+ acting as the donor. This is the first time that such a surgery, known as “ABO Incompatible Kidney Transplantation”, has been done in the country. The surgery was led by a team of doctors including transplant surgeon Dr Srinivas Guttha and nephrologist Dr. Kamal Kiran. The doctors said that using the new technique an additional 1500 live donor kidney transplants could be done every year.
