The government Stanley Hospital in Chennai celebrated the second anniversary of the hospital's first successful liver transplantation in January 2011. The director of the Institute of Surgical Gastroenterology in Stanley Hospital, Dr. R. Surendran said that 20 liver transplants have been carried out in the past two years. The success rate has been 75% with 15 out of the 20 patients alive and healthy now. It has the distinction of being the only government hospital in the country to perform successful liver transplants. This carries even more weight in light of the fact that liver transplants is an expensive procedure costing anywhere between Rs.30 lakh to Rs.35 lakh. The economically underprivileged have benefited from this. Deiva Sigamani, a sub-inspector of police, was the first policeman in the country to get a liver transplant under the government programme. Sayed Ali Fathima, a domestic worker, who had a liver transplant two years back at the hospital is doing fine too.
