A skin and tissue bank will be established at the King Institute in Guindy, Chennai, at a cost of Rs.6 crore to treat burn injury victims. This announcement was made by Mr. V.K. Subburaj, Principal Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu at the annual conference of the National Academy of Burns – India (NABI) in January 2011. Prof. J.L. Gupta, NABI patron, said that every year 2.5 lakh victims died of burn injuries, which is easily preventable.

A pilot project in three states is to be launched over the next three months to train doctors and plastic surgeons to treat burn injury victims. This will be done with the assistance of the Central government. The burns department in Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai has been chosen as one of the six training centers in the country. In addition to skin, amniotic tissue discarded after childbirth at government maternity hospitals will be retrieved, stored and used for treatment of burn injuries. Presently collagen is being used, which is quite expensive.
