The current organ donation rate in India has edged up from 0.08 per million to 0.14 per million population. This is essentially due to the three states Tamil Nadu , Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. leading the programme. These states are responsible for over 80% of deceased donations in India. In this regard, Tamil Nadu has excelled and some interesting facts are listed below –

 

Tamil Nadu has the highest eye donation rate in India - 8000 per year

The first successful kidney transplant in India was done in Tamil Nadu in 1971

The first successful multi-organ donation and Transplant was done in Tamil Nadu 1995

The highest number of heart transplants have been done in Tamil Nadu

In the last 18 months Tamil Nadu has had 77 deceased donors resulting in 237 organs (Heart -18, Lung -2, Liver- 65, Kidney -152), an all time high.

TN donation rate per year was 0.8 last year – 10 times the national average
