It was a question of getting a surgeon to the hospital on time so that he would perform a life-saving organ transplant and the "wings" that rose to the occasion and did precisely that was an aircraft from Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd (TAAL), a private charter aviation company based in Bangalore. The actual sequence of events was spread over three states in South India. It all started with a patient being declared brain dead in Warangal, Andhra Pradesh. The family agreed to donate their loved one's organs. The organs had to be retrieved as soon as possible and taken to Hyderabad where the transplant was to be performed. A team of surgeons retrieved the organs and brought then to Hyderabad by noon on Saturday, May 31. Meanwhile staff of MOHAN Foundation, Chennai, had been in touch with TAAL about flying Dr. Mohammed Ryela (a surgeon in the U.K, who was arriving in Chennai on Saturday morning) to Hyderabad immediately to perform the transplantation. TAAL had to make special efforts to have the Hyderabad airport kept open for landing as the runway was being re-laid which meant that the airport was closed to air traffic between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., but they did manage it and Dr.Ryela landed just in time to perform the transplantation. TAAL, which has aircraft based in Pune, Nagpur, Bangalore, Chennai and Madurai, has successfully operated more than 12 medical emergency flights over the past year. We hope they keep up the good work. A pair of eyes, kidneys and  liver were transplanted to five patients. Organs were shared by different hospitals in Hyderabad through the efforts of Mohan Foundation.
