Various hospitals in Chennai, which have been granted registration to perform kidney transplants under the "Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994," will need to clean up their act if they want to continue performing transplants. According to the Director of Medical Services, Chennai, Dr. Ramar., following complaints of sale of organs at some hospitals, they have decided to make surprise checks of all registered hospitals to find out if they still deserve the transplant centre status. The THO Act lays down specific requirements, both in terms of medical personnel as well as equipment and facilities, for a hospital to be registered as a transplant centre. However, apparently some of the registered hospitals have been cutting corners and no longer follow the norms that have been laid down. Dr. Raman said that though follow up on donors (in cases of live-unrelated donation) is mandatory, many hospitals do not bother either because the donors produce false addresses or because there is no money. The Directorate along with the police hopes to break the donor-broker-patient nexus. The Directorate of Medical Education, Dr. C. Ravindranath, who is the chairman of the Authorization Committee that authorizes live-unrelated donations said that there are long-term plans to plug loopholes in the THO Act with regard to live-unrelated donation.
