NKF, USA - Honours Dr. Georgi Abraham

Dr. Georgi Abraham was the recipient this year of the prestigious Gold Medal for his achievements from the National Kidney Foundation of USA. He is considered as the father of the CAPO programme in India. He received the gold medal during the annual conference of the foundation this year in April at Dallas, USA. He is only the second Indian to receive this honour. Previous recipient as been Dr. Chugh from Chandigarh.

His citation reads as follows: "Dr. Georgi Abraham has been Professor of Medicine at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai, India since 1996.His research activities focus on CAPO adequacy, nutrition and cardiac disease as well as bone disease and cardiovascular risk factors in transplant recipients. These research activities are partly funded by a grant from the Tamilnadu Kidney Research Foundation (TANKER), a charitable trust he founded in 1993 with a group of philanthropists. After working abroad in London, Kuwait and Toronto, where he had exposure to CAPO, Dr. Abraham returned to India in 1990 and initiated the country's first CAPO program. He founded the Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India in 1997, along with the Indian Journal of Peritoneal Dialysis.

A large number of junior doctors who were trained with him have gone abroad and are recognized nephrologists and researchers. He has written 74 publications in pre reviewed journals, 105 abstracts four book chapters. He is also an undergraduate and postgraduate examiner in various universities and was appointed as an examiner of the Royal College of Glasgow, UK, for MRCP Medicine in1998. He motivates junior doctors to do research in a meaningful way and get this material published in journalism India and abroad. He has spoken at various medical conferences in India and has taken part in symposia and as a guest speaker in peritoneal Dialysis Congress abroad. He is the director of the Model Sister Centre Programme by the International Society of Nephrology Division of the University of Toronto, Canada.
