Mrs. Kannambal Chandrasekaran did the nursing profession proud not only in life, but also in death. This dynamic lady who was born on March 2, 1944 in Coimbatore received her Diploma in Nursing from Christian Medical College, Vellore. She then worked as a staff nurse and later became Nursing Superintendent (1970-2002) at Sir Ivan Steed Fort Hospital, Chennai. Her dedication, sincerity and discipline made her one of the finest operation theatre nurses in the city and she worked with many leading surgeons in Chennai. In fact, on that fateful morning when tragedy struck, she was on her way to assist at a Caesarean operation. She was riding pillion on her daughter's two wheeler when an errant speed-breaker threw her off the scooter and she sustained a massive head injury. She was taken to Sundaram Medical Foundation Hospital immediately, but despite the best of medical care, the head injury led to brain death. Her grieving but courageous family decided to donate her organs because she had always been a lady of high moral and social ethics, helpful and caring, and they felt that by donating her organs she would be continuing to save lives - the ideal she had worked for all her life. The eyes, liver and kidneys were retrieved with the eyes going to the Rotary Eye Bank; the kidneys were shared by Sundaram Medical Foundation, Chennai and Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore (Mrs. Kanimbla’s Alma mater) and the liver was transplanted into a patient in Hyderabad. Mrs. Kannambal had given five different people a new life. We salute her and her courageous family – her husband, Mr. M. Chandrasekaran and her three daughters, Dr. Umamaheshwari, Dr. Chitrabharathi and MS. Krithika.
