Close to the heels of the first ovarian transplant done in China, the first ovarian transplant was done in India of March 29, 2002 in Mumbai.  The recipient was a 17 year old Nita (named changes) born with Turners syndrome – a genetic disorder where women lack the full complement of XX of their sex chromosome.  As a result their growth is affected, they are unable to mature sexually and are infertile. While growth problem can be taken care of and hormonal treatment can take care of pubertal development, the issue  of infertility can only be tackled by ovarian transplant.

The task was extremely daunting not only in terms of performing the complicated surgery but also in finding a donor. Finally Nita’s cousin, a 26 year old married woman with two children agreed to donate one of her ovaries to Nita and as luck would have it, her ovary was near perfect match for Nita 99 per cent.

The 5 hour transplant surgery was performed on March 29, 2002 at Kothari Hospital, Mumbai by a team of doctors, including gynecologists, Dr. Pravin and Dr. Jyothi Mhatre, microvascular surgeon Dr. Bimal Modi and cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Shrial Doshi.

The transplant was successful and Nita has been ovulating since her operation, her hormonal levels are on their way to “normal” and the doctors are hopeful that she will be able to conceive a child in some point in future, (However as earlier mentioned, the biological mother shall be the donor) But this kind of surgery, for the first time  holds out hope  for women with cancer and ovarian disease. As Nita says, “For the first time I feel like a complete woman”
