The figure speak for themselves a drop of 13% in the number of organ transplants for the first half of the year 2002 as compared to a similar period in 2001. According to UK Transplant, a total of 1172 transplant operations took place in the first six months of 2002 versus 1328 last year. Fewer fatal road accidents have led to a drop in potential donors, but also efforts are on to spur donation. The National Health Service hopes to add 7 million more people to the Organ Donor Register to try and shorten patient waiting lists for transplants. Currently, three to four patients are waiting for every organ that becomes available.
