According to The Lancet, a historic milestone was achieved with the transportation of a donor heart across the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. The donor, a 48-year-old man from the French West Indies, was declared brain dead three days after suffering an intracerebral hemorrhage. In this unprecedented attempt, the donated heart was transported across the Atlantic, covering a distance of 6750 km from the French West Indies to Paris, inside the cabin of a commercial airline flight. The transplant procedure took place at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Sorbonne University, in Paris in January 2024.

The Lancet highlighted this trial as notable case for three significant factors. Firstly, it involved the unprecedented transportation of a donor heart over a distance of 6750 kilometers. Secondly, the heart was preserved for an extended period of 12 hours and 06 minutes. Thirdly, the transportation was facilitated via commercial air transport, unlike the conventional donor heart transport practices.
