Angels of Change

MOHAN Foundation has launched a unique programme called “Angels of Change” in which selected volunteers are taken through a customised training module to enable them to undertake awareness initiatives on organ donation amongst various audiences. One such training workshop was held in Kolkata on June 20 & 21, 2017 in partnership with Anthyesti Foundation. One of the trained volunteers was Mr. Subhash Sarangi, a Life Member of MOHAN Foundation. Mr Sarangi not only travelled 150 km (one way) each day from Kharagpur to attend the training, he took official leave from his work at the Ministry of Railways, Kharagpur for the same. Armed with the training and with the help of the training kit provided at the end of the training, Mr Sarangi is now conducting awareness sessions for his colleagues and employees of railways. Read about his experience in his own words.

It was a cloudy evening during the rainy season. I was browsing internet in my laptop while travelling in Rajdhani Express from Bhubaneswar to Kanpur for presenting a scientific paper on Organ Donation in a national conference scheduled to be held at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, organized by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India. While surfing the net, I came upon the website of MOHAN (Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network) Foundation, Chennai. I went through the contents of the website and it touched my heart deeply. The noble effort put by the foundation in the domain of organ donation for the welfare of the ailing mankind, happened to bring about a distinct transformation in my thought process which inspired me instantly to fill up the consent form on-line. I pledged to donate my eyes, kidneys, lungs, liver, pancreas, heart, skin, bones, cornea etc for medical transplantation. I became a proud member of this wonderful foundation. Within few days, a beautiful kit from MOHAN Foundation was delivered to my home in which I discovered an elegant 'Organ Donor Card'.

On hearing about my willingness to donate organs after death, my 88 year old mother was the first person in my family to welcome my decision. Rest of the members took a little time to get convinced about the benefits of organ donation and finally supported my decision.

After a month ago, I got an e-mail from MOHAN Foundation inviting me to participate in a unique Volunteers' Training Programme called 'Angels of Change (AoC), at Kolkata on June 20-21, 2017. I felt it was a fantastic gift to me to boost my ambition to contribute to organ donation work in the country. I volunteered to join the training. The two day workshop was intense and was delivered by eminent Faculties of MOHAN Foundation; viz, Ms. Pallavi Kumar(Executive Director of MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR) and her team-member Ms. Mareena Thomas. It was hosted by Anthyesti Foundation, Kolkata. Ms. Shruthi Reddy, Director of Anthyesthi Foundation, was highly enthusiastic and proactive in providing all kinds of administrative support and amenities, including food and logistic support to run the workshop effectively. Participants were from different spheres of work including some bonafide students of Techno India University, Kolkata also participated. Programme was organized in the auditorium of the reputed Techno India University, through Power Point Presentations in participatory mode of delivery. A panel of distinguished Doctors and Medico Professionals from different Hospitals/Medical Colleges-Dr. Yashesh Paliwal (Intensivist, Critical Care Head – Fortis Hospital), Dr. Nidhi Agrawal (Nephrologist-RN Tagore Hospital), Dr. Shankar Dasgupta (Head – Quality CMRI & BMHRC Medical Superintendent), Dr. Tanushree Mondal (Assistant Director of Medical Education –DHS) - participated and delivered their valuable talks during the Workshop.

I was finally certified a trained “Angel of Change” volunteer by my esteemed trainer, Ms. Pallavi Kumar qualifying and empowering me to spread awareness amongst people on organ donation. My long awaited dream of becoming an Angel of Human Welfare appeared to be getting gradually translated into reality.

I was so inspired with the input delivered in the training programme that I instantly decided to organize similar awareness programmes in my own organization. On 12th and 14th July, 2017, two such programmes were organized by me at Supervisors' Training Centre (STC), Kharagpur, West Bengal, which is one of the Major Zonal Railway Training Centres of Ministry of Railways, Govt. Of India, thereby sensitizing 45 and 30 Railway Professionals respectively, on the significance of Organ Donation.

I express my heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude to Dr. Sunil Shroff, Ms. Shruthi Reddy, and Ms. Pallavi Kumar for contributing their significant amount of valuable time, talent and energy to ensure that the vital needs of the community are served. I am grateful to them for extending their wonderful support and selfless guidance in developing me as a Volunteer-cum-Angel of Change (AoC) in the domain of organ donation. Hats off to MOHAN Foundation. As a token of my love, regards and gratitude, a cash component of Rs. 5,000/- (Rupees five thousand only) is hereby being donated through NEFT to Anthyesti Foundation, Kolkata. Hope, it would serve as a miniature support in carrying out the noble activities of the foundation.

With warm regards.
