In a first for the coastal city of Mangaluru in Karnataka, city traffic police on 13th April 2015 created a “Green Corridor” to facilitate the transport of a brain dead donor’s heart valves, kidneys and liver from AJ hospital to the Mangaluru International Airport.

The “Green Corridor” was in operation from 10.16 pm for about 12 minutes till the organs reached the airport from the hospital, a distance of 11 km. From there the organs were transported by a special flight to Bengaluru. Mangaluru City Traffic Police ACP, Uday Nayak said that 30 police personnel ensured that the road remained clear of all vehicles.

The young deceased organ donor was Mr. Jeevan Vijay Fernandes, 24, who had met with an accident in the previous week and was declared brain dead on 13th April 2015. After that his family became aware that Jeevan was brain dead and there would be no way of bringing him back to life, they decided to donate his organs. “By this gesture we will see Jeevan light up others lives even through his death,’” said his cousin Vincent Fernandes.

Surgeons from AJ Hospital, Mangaluru and BGS Global Hospital, Bengaluru, successfully carried out the retrieval  of the kidneys, heart valves, liver and corneas.
