India's first ever successful intestinal transplant took place on November 24, 2012 when a 30-year-old software engineer was transplanted with a donor intestine. This transplant surgery was performed at Gurgaon's Medanta - The Medicity by a team of 30 doctors headed by transplant surgeon Dr. A. S. Soin .

The transplant surgery which lasted for about 10 hours has given a new lease of life to Mr.Himanshu Singh who developed severe abdominal pain in 2009. He underwent an emergency laparotomy in which the surgeons found thrombosis (blockage) of the main vein of his intestine resulting in loss of blood supply to his intestine. He has since then been on intravenous nutrition as he was unable to digest anything normally.

Doctors evaluated and counseled Mr. Himanshu Singh to undergo an intestinal transplant and put him on the waiting list. After a wait of three years, a match was found on November 24 and the transplant was done. During the three year waiting period, Mr. Himanshu Singh suffered several episodes of life-threatening infections and was hospitalized 11 times. He underwent six minor surgeries to place or change feeding tubes in his veins. About two weeks after the surgery, Mr. Himanshu Singh began eating again.
