The 13th Congress of the Middle East Society of Organ Transplantation (MESOT) was held from 12th to 15th December 2012 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The 4th Middle East Transplant Games for Donors and Recipients was also held concurrently.

MESOT has been the regional pioneer in enhancing transplantation activities, and in providing a platform for cooperation among its members. Over the past 25 years MESOT has been instrumental in setting up and expanding transplant programmes across the Middle East.

The theme of the 13th MESOT Congress was 'Ethical Organ Donation'. To combat transplant commercialism, trade and unethical conduct, the MESOT has become a leading and active partner in establishing The Transplant Society and International Society of Nephrology policies on medical/ethical issues. The 13th MESOT Congress conducted intensive and exciting scientific programmes packed with the latest knowledge and technical know-how on a large number of topics including transplantation in MESOT countries. Currently, only transplants from related live donors are performed in the UAE. The only designated centre for such procedures is the Shaikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, which has performed more than 60 kidney transplants over the last three years.
