A 14-year-old Canadian teenager needing a heart pump can now go to her school along with her friends thanks to the next generation heart pumps that can be carried around in a purse.

Kolby Zanier was fitted with a Heart Ware pump on 28 August 2011 after she was diagnosed with severe heart and kidney failure. The new pump was fitted following a five hour procedure. The pump weighs just over 2 kg and comes with a controller, batteries and spares. The pump allows her to run around and even play volleyball though swimming is not an option for the 14-year old girl.
