M.S. Sandeep, 16, became the youngest person to undergo a heart transplant in Karnataka after doctors were able to use the heart from a 25-year old man who became brain dead following an accident in May 2011. Sandeep had been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy 18 months earlier. Sandeep's father, police constable B. Shivarudraya said that seven years ago he had lost a daughter to the same ailment and was hoping that he would not lose his son as well. Dr. Praveen Kumar, senior consultant cardiac surgeon at Narayana Hrudayalaya, where the transplant was performed, said that Sandeep was very lucky that he received the heart just in time and expressed the need for more people to donate their hearts.

Sunita Devi, 44, underwent heart  transplantation on 17th May 2011 at Sir  Gangaram Hospital, making it the 30th heart transplant in Delhi and the first in a private hospital in the capital. Dr. Sujay Shad, director of the heart transplant unit of the hospital said that the heart of the deceased donor was a perfect match for the patient, who had been admitted just three days earlier. Therefore, without wasting any time, the transplant was performed. India's first heart transplant was done at the All India  Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on 3rd August 1994, which has done 26 since then. Army Research & Referral Hospital has done three successful heart transplants.
