Bangladesh’s kidney transplant programme has been active for over five years and they have done close to 400 kidney transplants.

More recently the country accepted brain death legislation and they now hope to start the deceased donor programme. At a function in Dhaka a seminar was held to give a push to this programme. Dr.Haroon Rashid, leading nephrologist of Bangladesh had organised the meeting. The law against commerce in kidneys in very strict and apparently only relatives can be donors in the country and a declaration to this eff ect has to be made in the press. The young brigade of nephrologists and surgeons were very enthusiastic to kick start their cadaver programme and are looking towards some guidelines from India and to visit some of our centres that do cadaver transplants regularly.
