Mumbai’s second kidney crossove transplant (kidney swap) was successfully performed on 10th April 2007 at the Hinduja Hospital, Mahim, Mumbai. In this crossover transplant, Mrs. Malini Honrao donated her kidney to Mrs. Hema Shroff who was on dialysis thrice a week for kidney failure. In donated his kidney to Malini’s 26-year old son, Jeetendra. Jeetendra had been suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure) since he was in class X and a kidney transplant was the only solution Malini could not donate her kidney to her  son because they had mismatched blood groups and it was the same case for Deepak and his wife, Hema. Finding an altruistic unrelated live donor is extremely difficult and cadaver (brain dead) donors are still difficult to come by with long transplant waiting lists. Deepak says that that was one of the reasons he decided to look at the kidney swap option. The two families met for the first time at a support group meeting held at Hinduj  Hospital last year. It took them a few months to make up their minds and then another six months to do the paperwork, according to Jeetendra’s father, Laxman Honrao. State director general of health services, Dr. Prakash Doke says, “Kidney swaps mean there can be no malpractice that is usually associated with the kidney trade, but this cannot be the norm as many tests and matches are needed for such exchanges.” Hinduja Hospital nephrologist, Dr. Jatin  Kothari, said that both Hema and Jeetendra were doing well presently. He also said Hinduja Hospital was planning to maintain a registry of couples with mismatched blood groups, couples who may want to try out the kidney crossover/swap option.
