A Michigan woman has become the first person to undergo an experimental cell transplant that doctors hope  will lead  to a cure  for diabetes. The woman, Jackie Warren Demijohn, had been suffering since she was seven from Type I Diabetes, forcing her to rely of insulin shots  to control her blood sugar levels.  Doctors at the University  of Miami’s Diabetes Research Institute  transplanted insulin producing  cells (islets) and bone marrow  cells  from a deceased , unrelated donor. Before the infusion of new cells, her blood sugar would rise  and fall dramatically, regardless of how closely she monitored  them, leaving her at a risk for all the complications of uncontrolled diabetes.
