What does one do when a kidney failure patient awaiting transplant has w willing donor, but their blood or tissue types don’t match? Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, seems to have found an answer to that question. The hospital has an incompatible Kidney Transplant Program, which can cross-reference donor-recipient pairs to find a compatible match. Since 2001, the hospital has performed four double transplants using this technique.  But, this year, the first “triple switch” kidney transplant was done. One of the recipients, Tracy Stahi, a 39 year old woman from Pennsylvania, received a kidney from Julia Tower, 57, from Maryland, who had initially hoped to give her kidney to family friend, Jeremy Weiser Warschoff, a 13 year old boy, also from Maryland. Anyway, it was a happy ending for Tracy, Jeremy and the third recipient, Germaine Allum, a 30 year old woman from Florida, since the kidneys from their respective donors were “ switched” around so that each recipient got a compatible match.
