Once again, questions are being raised about the organ transplantation scenario in China and Japan. China has already been in the dock for using organs from criminals who have received the death penalty. Apparently, the death penalty can be applied in China for "more than 70 crimes including hooliganism, bribery and political deviance". Whether the death penalty is carried out and when it is carried out may be determined by whether "petty criminals have the right organ and blood type at the right time or place." Chinese hospitals have a vested interest in organ trade as they are said to be financially hard up. In Japan, the brain death law is believed to be a product of financial incentives and this could therefore translate into "denying termination of life-support when desired and by urging transplantation from those who are not yet even sure of the meaning of brain death". Once again, it is back to the questions of the price of freedom of choice and the price of human life.
