The kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has an active cadaver organ donation and transplantation programmes under the auspices of the Saudi centre for organ transplantation scholars approved the act of organ donation. SCOT then launched a major publicity campaign involving the media as well as prominent medical, social and religious personalities to educate the public and medical professionals about brain death ad organ donation. SCOT not only constantly upgrades a registry of patients on maintenance dialysis but also maintains an active transplant waiting list to ensure an equitable distribution of retrieved organs. Till the end of 2000,more than 3000 renal transplants have been performed in 11 transplant centers in Saudi Arabia. Also 196 livers, 87 hearts 220 heart valves, 367 corneas, 4 pancreas, 8 lungs and more than 150 bone marrow transplants have been performed there .with the reported annual incidence of ESRD in the country being 100-200 patients per million population and with 640 patients currently on dialysis in 126 centers , lot more needs to be done to fill the gap between demand and supply but SCOT has accomplished a great deal in trying to bridge that gap.
