7th CAST meet in India

The 7th CAST congress was held successfully at New Delhi, from 2nd to 6th March 2002. It was a landmark meeting and the first Asian Transplant meet to be held in India. Despite all the problems the organizers had faced in outing the meet together (due to the 9/11 affairs followed by the 13th Dec ’01 events in India) Dr. D. S. Rana and his team did a commendable job in bringing this international transplant meet to India. There was also the Spanish “Transplant Procurement Management Group”, who conducted a workshop for a day on Transplant co-ordination for India contingent who wished to improve their skills. A laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy was conducted at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The packed programme included many interesting sessions. The session on “Ethical Issues” moderated by Dr. A. Vatsala invited a lot of heat especially when the issue of compensation in living un-related donation was discussed. Dr. A. Vatsala from Singapore the current president handed over the mantel to Dr Mahendra Bhandari the incoming president for the next two years. It was a proud moment for India.

Dr. William Groth, President of the International Transplant Society also attended the meet and was very appreciative of the efforts. He was also impressed that some headway was being made in the cadaver transplant field in India. He was the first person to congratulate me when I finished my talk on “Cadaver Transplant – An India Perspective” and said the good work should carry on.
