Researchers working at Kyoto Prefectural University of medicine. Japan have come up with a transplant technique that is suitable for acute ocular injury as well as chronic phase patients with massive scarring. In this technique corneal epithelial stem cell cultivated on denuded amiotic membrane are used to repair ocular surface defected. The investigators studied 13 eyes in 11 Patients. They found that 48 hours post transplant all the eyes showed clear smooth corneal surface were covered by the transplanted epithelium visual acuity improved in all eyes with 10 eyes achieving restoration of good vision and 3 eyes showing less improvement. All the patient received systemic immunosuppression however 3 eyes showed evidence of epithelial rejection. The rest of the eyes after a mean of 11.2 months remained stable and without any ocular surface defects (Ophthalmology 2001; 108: 1569 – 1574)
