The will to give is there, but what is really needed is to translate thought into deed. Dr. Martin Molzahn, Head of the German foundation of organ transplantation [DSO] said that while 70% of Germans say they would donate organs after death, only 12% of Germans actually carry donor card. In 2001, some 3,382 organs from non-living donors were transplanted in Germany, compared with 3,383 in 2000. Of the total in 2001, 1963 kidneys were transplanted, 407 parts, 662 livers, 138 lungs, 212 pancreas. However, around 14,000 people are still waiting for life-saving transplants. Dr. Molzahn said that the German Hospitals needed to take a more active role in helping in increase the available number of organs. He said that only around 600 Germany’s 14,000 hospitals with Intensive care units participated actively in the organ donation programme. The organ transplantation foundation encourages all hospital with intensive care units to allot the foundation about critically injured patients are potential organ donors.
