Ms. Nancy Scheper – Hughes, of “Organ watch” (an international NGO tracking Human organs commercialization), presented her findings in a speech to the United States Congress on June 27, 2001.

She said, “The growth of ‘medical tourism’ for transplant surgery and other advanced procedures have exacerbated older division between North and South, and between haves and have-nots. In general, the flow of organs, tissues, and body parts follows the modern routes of capitalism from South to North, from third to first world, from poor to rich, from black and brown to white, and from female to male bodies. In the very worst intense, this market has resulted in theft and coercion, has in the case of China, to a self-serving belief in the rights of the rich to the “spare parts” of the poor, as in the case of the many transplant junkets arranged to carry affluent patient from Saudi Arabia, Israel and North America to Turkey, India, Romania, and Philippines where kidney sellers were recruited from prisons, unemployment offices, and urban shanty towns.

She further added.”Illicit and exploitative organ procurement practices are protected by the invisibility and social exclusion of the world’s population of organ suppliers and organ sellers – both living and dead, most of whom are poor and socially marginal.” She further noted that in the desperate attempt to make money, many traditional notions about bodily integrity have been rejected and people resorted to the humiliating option of selling a part of them.”
