Possibility of preserving fertility through ovarian tissue transplantation into arms

An arm-twisting tactic, of sorts, but promising hope to women who have their ovaries removed is this new strategy where ovarian tissue is transplanted to the arm prior to radiation therapy for cancer or when the ovaries removed is this new strategy where ovarian tissue is transplanted to the arm prior to radiation therapy for cancer or when the ovaries are removed due to non-cancerous conditions like ovarian cysts. According to Kutluk Oktay, MD and his colleagues at Cornell University Medical School in New York City, USA, relocating some ovarian tissue to the forearm could help prevent premature menopause in younger women and possibly preserve fertility. While their study of 2 patients yielded positive signs of persevered hormone production, Dr Oktay felt that future studies in larger groups of women would be needed to determine whether the procedure also protects fertility. Their first patient, who had survived cancer, had her ovarian tissue removed and implanted in strips under the skin of her forearm prior to a course of pelvic irradiation. The other patient, who had recurrent cysts in her only ovary, had a similar implantation. While in both patients, the transplanted tissue produced normal ovarian hormones, in the patient with cervical cancer, the hormone levels were not high enough to produce ovulation. This was remedied with fertility drugs. On the other hand the patient with ovarian cysts began to ovulate about 6 months after transplantation.
