Football fans support organ donation
One would not think that organ donation and football had anything in common, but a Brazilian football club has established that Brazilian football club has established that unlikely connection. Sport club Recife, one of the topmost teams in north east of Brazil is supporting organ donation. Jorge Pexioto, the vice- president of the club for social programmes said that they had decided to look beyond the 11 players on the field and uses its power for bigger things. They asked their fans to become “immortal fans” by donating their organs after they die, so that their love for the club will live on in someone else’s body. As a result as many as 65000 people signed up for an organ donor card. And, in fact the organ transplant waiting list in the city of Recife was reduced almost to zero within one year.
“I promise that your eyes will keep on watching sport club Recife”, says one man waiting for a cornea transplant in the television ad, made to publicize the campaign. “I promise that your heart will keep on potential recipient of a transplanted heart.
The video is screened at every match in the clubs lha do Retrio stadium, a venue that seats 35000. The impact has also been felt throughout the surroundings state of Pernambuco. Fernando Figueria, director of heart transplant at Pernambuco institute of integrated medicine, said that they used to perform from five to seven heart transplants a year, but last year there was an amazing increase to 28 transplants. He attributed this rise in the number of transplant to a close connection with the campaign. According to Brazilian law, it’s up to the family to decide whether the organs of their loved ones will be donated after their death. But making this decision is one of the most difficult things to do when a loved one has passed away.
