The number speaks for themselves –from 1998, when the first transplant operation was done in Romania ,till 2003 only 19 heart transplants,48 liver and around 900 kidney transplants have been carried out .doctors in Romania say that the number of donors in the country is 100 times less than the average in many western states and numbers are falling.

Is the Romanian government failing to take the initiative to help promote the organ donation programme? Two doctors working in the transplant programme had this to say about the state of the organ donation programme in Romania.

Dr.mihai lucan, one of the country’s top transplant specialists said that transplants were  still considered a luxury in Romania. The government ,he feels ,thinks that Romania. The government ,he feels ,thinks that Romania is too poor a country to develop a transplant programme.he pointed out that in 50 years’time half of any hospital’s activities.’’it’s time that they awoke to this reality, ‘’ he said .Dr.victor zota, one of three physicians ‘’coordinating transplant operation was of the opinion that the government was disinclined to recognise the monumental work that hospital staff put in to making a transplant happen .The staff was neither paid nor compensated in any way for his work .In fact ,Dr.zota said that he himself performed his role as “coordinator “for free even though it often meant that he had to take days off from his usual job as a hospital physician to do it.

The health ministry ,on the other hand, said that it was preparing a special body under its auspices to coordinates all matter related to transplants.
