‘’Opt-out’’ intiative gaining momentum in UK

‘’OPT-OUT’’INTIATIVE GAINING MOMENTUM IN U.K.

The British transplantation society ,which is made up of doctors, nurses and other professionals who carry out transplants in the U.k.,is to press members of parliaments to back an amendment to the human tissue bill. The amendment in question is the ‘’opt-out’’ system ,wherein only individuals signing an opt-out’’ register would not have their hearts, kidney, lungs and other body parts removed if they are killed in an accident. This system has been recently adopeted in Austria and spain and had led to a significant increase in donated organs.up until now, doctors in the U.K.had backed the ‘’opt-in’’ system wherein donors had to specify their willingness to donate their organs. But a critical shortage of organ ,has triggered  a change in the attitude of doctors involved in transplants. As john wallwork ,the surgeon who performed europe’s first successful heart-lung transplant at papworth hospital in 1984,said .’’the problem we have is if people die ,we do not get access  to their organs are donated in a year.with 82% of the member of transplantation society backing an ‘’opt-out’’ system ,support for this system is at its strongest.however, peter rowe ,transplant surgeon and chairman of the society’s ethics committee said that even with the opt-out’’ system .if families objected to organ retrieval or if realtives would not be taken .’’This is not something we want to force on bereaved families,’’he added.
