Liver Transplants

Time – Saving Liver Transplant Technique

In a field where time holds the key Dr. Elmahdi Elkhammas and D Mitchell Henry from Ohio State University Medical Centre in Columbus have good news. They have developed a technique that shorten operating time for liver transplantation by about 1 hour and also reduces blood transfusion requirement by about 25% the technique that has been used in more than 140 transplants  seems to have survival outcomes that are comparable with those obtained by the traditional method. in the new technique the inferior vena cava is reconstructed in such a way that reconnecting the blood vessels  is simplified and bypass is avoided. The traditional technique involves removing the entire liver including the inferior vena cave behind it.
