2002-The Year also of Shift in Attitude to organ donation

The only redeeming feature of the year has been the slight shift in the attitude of public in India towards organ donation. Some of us who have been in the forefront of the cadaver organ donation program have seen this slight shift. In the last six donations that have taken place in the “Initiative for organ sharing” hospitals in Tamil Nadu, the families have themselves come forward for organ donation. In a couple of instances where the hospitals were not authorized to conduct retrieval of organs, the bodies were shifted from one hospital to another; such has been the determination of the people.  We think there are many factors for this shift and one of them is surely the continued campaign for organ donation.

Let us hope that this shift  in attitude continues, we still have a long way to go to achieve  anything significant in this field but this is a good sign and will  encourage many of us to continue the struggle.
