World’s first penis transplant performed

The world’s first penis transplant was performed in China on a 44-year-old man who had lost his penis in an accident. A 10 cm penis from a dead donor was transplanted. However, the transplanted penis had to be removed again because the recipient and his wife experienced psychological problems as a result of the surgery.

Andrew George, a transplant expert at Imperial college, London said that the procedure was no more complex than other transplant procedures. He added that it took time for nerve sensations to be felt and that it was unclear whether sex could be performed with the transplanted penis. Given the vast psychological implications, the question remains as to whether a transplant such as this, for cosmetic reasons, is warranted.
