The number of deceased donor organ donations is going up in Tamil Nadu and hospitals in Chennai are expanding their hospital programmes. A team led by Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan at Fortis Malar did its first heart transplant on a 34-year-old patient on Friday 18^th June 2010.  A team from Frontier Lifeline Hospital has moved to Global Hospitals to start a heart transplant programme there. The Apollo Hospitals’ liver transplant team, led by Dr. Anand Khakhar, is creating infrastructure and is preparing a waiting list of patients for pancreas and bowel transplants. 

June 2010 saw three deceased donor organ donations in two days. Brain deaths were declared at the Government Stanley Hospital, Global Hospitals and Apollo Hospitals and the organs were shared with different hospitals, including Christian Medical College in Vellore. Organs, including heart, kidneys, liver and eyes, were harvested. While the vital organs were transplanted, heart valves and eyes were stored for future use.

Mr. K Subburaj, Health Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu said that they hoped to bring in a situation like in the West where 95% of transplants done is from deceased organ donors.
