Facebook's organ donation initiative

Facebook users who are already organ donors can add that information to their profile page, now known as their timeline. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled an initiative in May 2012 to use the vast social network to help connect organ donors with people who need lifesaving transplants. Zuckerberg announced the initiative and was one of the first Facebook users to sign up to donate on the social network. Zuckerberg said his friendship with Apple Inc. cofounder Steve Jobs, who had received a liver transplant before he died last year, helped spur the idea, as did talks with his girlfriend (now wife) Priscilla Chan, a medical student. The Facebook tool works like this: Users go to their timelines, where under Life Event they will see a health and wellness section. Zuckerberg said, "You put in, 'I decided to be an organ donor' and your state or country you live in and you can add a story about how you decided to be an organ donor."
