A Braveheart’s Wife Saves Lives

When Mr.Hemant Karkare, Chief of Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorist Squad, died in the terrorist attack in Mumbai on 26th November 2008, the nation mourned the braveheart. His wife, Kavita Karkare, picked up the pieces and carried on, along with her three children. But tragedy was to strike the family yet again. Kavita Karkare became brain dead following a brain haemorrhage in September 2014. She was only 57. But, this brave family was not to be cowed down by this second tragedy. The children triumphed over their mother’s death by donating her organs. The battle for life was won for many a patient because of the decision of this braveheart’s family. Kavita Karkare’s kidneys, liver and eyes were donated to needy patients. Dr. Sucheta Desai, Transplant coordinator, at P.D. Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai said that the decision to donate was taken jointly by all the three children of the Karkares and they were completely committed to it.
