Living Heart Donation

Odd, but true-living heart donation can be done but odder still, it can only be done by an individual requiring a lung transplant. This is because the individual would receive a heart-lung bloc donation from a cadaver, and the individual's own heart would be removed (along with the diseased lungs) and donated to another person. This situation srises when the physician determines that the cadaveric lungs will function better if transplanted along with the cadaveric heart. According to UNOS, 12 such living heart donations took place in 1990, but there have been only two since 1995.
